Marine Life, Mussels & Sea
Creatures Thriving Side by Side

Habour Seals can be seen along side mussel drops throughout the year.  Wolf eels, crustaceans and small fish find protection among the mussels drops, inhabiting tiny crevices as the ocean current supplies nutritional food required for the growth of all species.
Orcas often hunt these playful harbour seals who seek protection amongst our mussels drops

Our Farming Practices Allow for the Evolution of an Underwater World That Would Otherwise be Non-Existent!

Sea urchins and other invertebrates co-exist with our mussels
Growing mussels suspended using this culture method transforms an otherwise lifeless water column into a thriving ecosystem, proving the beneficial nature of what we do. Not only do our farming practices encompass sustainability and promote biodiversity, they create an underwater habitat teeming with life.
As producers, our mussel farms play a vital role in providing a safe haven for flora and fauna to establish mutually beneficial relationships that support, regulate and improve the quality and quantity of the marine environment.

Island Sea Farms Crew Hard at Work

Caleb gearing up for the day at our mussel farm
Caleb is gearing up for the day, preparing to wash the predator nets.  Predators, such as perch and ducks are not harmed, as these nets act as a deterrent.  To ensure that phytoplankton is readily available to our mussels, nets are regularly maintained  to provide proper ocean flow.
Sean Tying Rafts at ISF Farm
Sean is performing raft safety checks including securing anchor lines, clearing walkways and general housekeeping.  This is especially critical during extreme high and low tides, storm season and winter conditions that can break or sink our rafts.
Divers on their way to work at one of our farms
Divers heading out to check our mussels at all 7 farm sites.  Our divers along with our underwater cameras allow us to assess mussel drops, growth, damage and yield effectively and to respond on a timely basis.
