Welcome to Island Sea Farms, proud home of Saltspring Island Mussels. Founded in 1996, we set out with a dream to cultivate the world's finest mussels in one of the most stunning locations on Earth. An idea that began with two dreamers in an open skiff has grown into a passionate team of hatchery, farm and processing specialists. Today, our mussels are savored from British Columbia and California to  Toronto, Canada and the vibrant city of Tokyo, Japan. Together, our team strives to create a thriving future for both our mussel business and the communities we cherish.

There's magic in the waters surrounding these jewel-like islands. The Kuroshio Current crosses the Pacific from Japan and crashes into the continental shelf upwelling nutrients. These mix with minerals from streams and rivers that cascade down steep forested fjords. This marriage creates a shellfish farming paradise.  Today we are fortunate to have seven different farms in the Discovery Islands, BC; a magical part of the world.

Our Hatchery

Discover the journey of our exquisite mussels. From egg to larvae, to seed, our mussels begin their transformation at our hatchery on Saltspring Island, in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia.  Once seed is viable, it is carefully transported to the nutrient-rich waters of the Discovery Islands. Thanks to our innovative breeding techniques and the abundance and diversity of phytoplankton in these pristine waters, our mussels are not only sweet but remarkably plump. Experience the taste of the coast with every bite!
